This tutorial will walk you through the process of enabling Khmer Unicode on your Windows XP computer (if you need help installing Khmer Unicode on Windows 7 click here). First downloadΒ  Khmer Unicode Installer for Windows XP and then run the file – when you do you should see something like the following: 1 Now click the “Next >” button as shown in the picture. 2 Click the “Next >” again (if a box telling you that the directory does not exist pops up, just tell it to create the directory). 3 Now click “Exit” (it is possible the “Windows File Protection” box might pop-up before you can click “Exit”, if this occurs, go to the next step to deal with the “Windows Protection” box and then once you are done, click the “Exit” button on the Installer window. 4 When this box pops-up click “Cancel” 5 When this box pops-up click “Yes” Now go here and download the latest Khmer Unicode Install Program (currently it is version 1.2.5) and once it is finished downloading, run the program. When you run it you should see something like the following: 6 Click “Next” 7 When this box pops-up click the “Complex & kbd” button (this can take a few moments to install, so please be patient). It is possible that you will need your Windows XP cd at this time – so if you are asked for it, please insert it into your cd-rom. 8 When the text “Complex script enabled/Keyboard layout added.” appears click the “Close” button. 9 To finish off the installation, click the “Exit” button. 10 Now you should see a new button in the lower right corner of your screen saying either, “EN” or “CA”. When you want to type in English, make sure “EN” is showing, and when you want to type in Khmer Unicode, make sure the “CA” is showing. To switch between the two languages, you can click on the button and select (like the picture above shows), or you can press the “Alt” key and the “shift” key which is on the right hand side of your keyboard (if you press the “shift” key that is on the left hand side of your keyboard it will not switch). Enjoy!

I have heard some people have had success using Khmer Unicode with Quark XPress 8, but I don’t believe it works with either version 5 or 6.

I have a lot of problem with Khmer Unicode. How to type Khmer Unicode in all program? Is there any Solution? Please Show how! Thank In Advance!

    • Hello Seng,
Many programs do not yet support Khmer Unicode – we will just have to wait until more support it. If you use the latest software (windows 7, office 2010 etc.) you will have a better chance of unicode working in the programs.

  • I find khmer unicode (ver.2.0.1) is not working well with MS Office 2010, especially when it comes to justifying margin. That is, letters instead of words are separated to begin a new line. Anyone has any suggestion on this issue?

    • Are you using Windows 7 or Windows XP?

From my understanding and experience, using justified never works out all that well with any Khmer font – but if you send me a file and a screen shot of what you see, I can take a look – sunkhum at gmail

    • Those symbols normally mean a non-Khmer Unicode font is being used. Can you change the font in the document to Khmer OS or another Khmer Unicode font and see if that helps?

    • Hi Pagna, if you are on Windows XP (I am on Windows 7, so I can’t give exact directions) Click Start, type intl.cpl in the Run box, and then press ENTER.
      # On the Languages tab, click Details.
      # Under Installed services, click Add.
      # In the Input language list, click Catalan
      # In the Keyboard layout/IME list, you should see the option for a NiDA keyboard, choose that one.
      and then click OK.
      See if that helps.

    Reply
    • There are no new versions of Khmer Unicode because it already is working. Microsoft Office Word does not work on Ubuntu – unless you use something like WINE: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Microsoft_Office

But I am still not sure if there would be full compatibility.

If you want to use Microsoft Office, it would be better to use Windows 7. And if you want to use the spelling checker and grammar checker for Khmer, use OpenOffice or LibreOffice (both of which work in Ubuntu and Windows).
